Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my light smell of fish?
Why does my socket smell of fish?
Why does my light switch smell fish?

this strange smell is probably emanating from a burning electrical component. Electrical shielding, wires, and other plastic components emit a “fish” or “urine” smell when exposed to high heat.

You may also notice the light switch or socket getting warm or hot and you may see black marks on these too.

We recommend getting us to take a look for your safety and peace of mind.

Why does my light flicker?
Why does my light switch buzz?

In general, flickering lights are caused by a simple drop or fluctuation in household voltage that causes the lights to dim momentarily. A variety of common issues can cause your lights to flicker, these are some likely causes.

  • Loose wiring

  • broken old and worn light bulbs

  • incompatible dimmer switch(these can be very temperamental, we recommend getting a qualified electrician to check compatibility).

  • faulty switch.

Flickering lights are normally not a cause for alarm. But sometimes they can indicate a more serious underlying issue. Constant or severe drops in lighting can result from circuit overloads or faulty connections somewhere along the circuit. Both problems can be serious safety concerns and should be discussed with an electrician.

Is my fusebox / fuse box dangerous or does it need replacing?

We would recommend updating to the latest fuse box or consumer unit, this is to ensure that you have the very best in safety features to protect you and your family,

A new "Fusebox" branded Fuse Box with full RCBO's and SPD protection.

An RCBO(Residual current operated Circuit Breaker with Overcurrent protection) performs 2 important functions that the old rewireable fuses fail to do.

An RCBO will cut the power in the event of an overload to the circuit(which the rewireable fuses do but nowhere near as efficiently meaning that your wiring circuits could become damaged).

An important function that an RCBO does also is that if for example your toaster had an earth fault/leak the outer metal casing of the toaster is likely to become live which will give you a nasty shock, the RCBO would detect this fault and automatically disconnect the power before you were to touch it.

We fit SPD's (Surge Protection Devices) as standard in all our consumer units.

SPD's perform an important role in protecting against spikes in the incoming electrical system which could damage your sensitive electrical items(TV's, PC's, LED lighting etc.)

Why do my LED's lights keep blowing or breaking?
Why do my electrical items keep breaking?

Over the past few years with the introduction of many low voltage devices within the household now we have noticed that many of these items keep breaking, we have monitored this closely and can summarise that this is most probably due to the spikes in the electrical system coming from your main supplier, since we've installed SPD's into properties we have noticed a dramatic fall in the amount of problems of this type.

We fit SPD's (Surge Protection Devices) as standard in all our consumer units.

SPD's perform an important role in protecting against spikes in the incoming electrical system which could damage your sensitive electrical items(TV's, PC's, LED lighting etc.)

We can also retro-fit SPD's either within your current consumer unit or within a separate enclosure.
